GPUDirect RDMA

GPUDirect technology from NVIDIA facilitates direct data exchange between multiple GPUs, third-party network adapters, solid-state drives, and other PCIe devices. GPUDirect allows for peer-to-peer transfers between GPUs and remote direct memory access (RDMA), ideal for High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Machine Learning (ML) applications. P2P transfers enable data exchanges between two GPUs on a host without relying on host memory, easing the burden on the host CPU, while multi-host RDMA allows a Host Channel Adapter (HCA) to directly read and write GPU memory data buffers and transfer the data through a remote HCA to a GPU on another host, bypassing host memory and reducing host CPU involvement. Both approaches exhibit significant performance improvements for GPU accelerated HPC and ML/DL applications.

No GPUDirect P2P

Without GPUDirect P2P, the host CPU must transfer data from one GPU’s memory, to host memory, and then into the second GPU’s memory.

GPUDirect P2P

With GPUDirect P2P, the data can be transferred directly without host CPU involvement and without data being transferred to host memory.
